Hartley Construction, Inc., (HCI) is an independent design and building firm that was founded by John D. Hartley in 1978.
Our first commitment is service to our clients. Our goal is to co-create with our clients the finest quality, most beautiful and sustainable homes possible within each client's budget.
The experience of designing and building a custom home can be one of the most exciting and creative expressions of a person's life. We at Hartley Construction have over 30 years of experience (90 collectively) in helping people navigate thru the many options and choices that arise during the design and building process. We encourage the full participation of our clients through all phases of the design and building process to ensure that your home is uniquely yours.

Meet our Staff...
President
John D. Hartley, Architect
John is a licensed NC Architect and Licensed General Contractor. A 1969 graduate of Clemson University School of Architecture. From 1969 to 1972, John served as an architect with the Peace Corps in Tunisia, North Africa. He worked as an architect in the Washington, DC vicinity from 1972 to 1976 and returned to Africa for another year in 1976. He served as President of Environmentally Responsive Shelter, Inc. (ERS) from 1978 to 1995. John has been the President of Hartley Construction, Inc., since 1995. Office Manager
R. Steven Bailey Steve has nearly 30 years experience in construction cost management. He is a native of West Virginia and an alumnus of both Concord College (1972-73) and Marshall University (1973-75). Steve returned to college in the early 1990s to pursue his passion in mathematics and engineering studies. He has a reputation as being a man of great patience, integrity, and ability who is efficient at helping clients keep track of construction decisions and financial tracking. He and his wife, Julie, have been married since 1976 and have four children.

Jay L. Condie
Jay is a licensed general contractor, has over 20 years experience in all phases of construction, literally from the ground to the roof and all spaces in between. He has been married to wife Laura for over 25 years and they have two daughters, plus two grandchildren. Interestingly enough, Jay’s gray hair arrived long before his grandchildren. In addition to his great sense of humor (a valuable gift in the building industry), Jay has a keen eye for detail and time management on the job site. He takes enormous pride in the exceptional quality of our HCI homes. |
